George REES |
---|
George REES was my mother's father's father.
He was born 20th October 1845 at St Mary's Hospital, Bristol. This was part of the workhouse. There was no father's name on the certificate. In 1851 he was living with his unmarried mother at 13 Deep street, St James. In 1861 he was a "scholar" at the Certified Industrial School at 6 Pennywell Road, St Philips. Children were sent to these schools by magistrates after being in trouble with the police. The annual report for 1860 lists a "G.R." whose previous behaviour was "bad as reported by the police" but was now "good" - he had a "parent in Australia" (Could this have been the father?). He lived at Brick Street in 1866. He married Elizabeth COGGINS 19 November 1866 at St Judes parish church. Witnesses were Susannah Rees (his sister?) and Benjamin Williams. He gives his father as Thomas REES but there is no other evidence for this. He lived at 4 Pinnell Street in 1870. He lived at 1 Braggs Lane in 1871 and 1881. He lived at 5 Mayne's Court, West Street, St Phillips in 1890-1901. He was living at 32 Monk Street in 1913 when his wife died. According to mum - built St Agnes Church. He was little and bearded, and lived "down the dings" before moving in with them at 17 Cowley Street. He died, of syncope and cerebral apoplexy, at 17 Cowley Street 1st September 1924. Parents
