According to a history of St Oswald's Church, Lythe by the Rev D.J.Hill M.A.
In 867 Vikings landed on the beaches South of Lythe and caused havoc
Some of them settled down and married local girls
The opened a Burial Ground near the present church - some graves had crosses - therefore they had become Christian
The Alum Works started up about 1607 and was the major employer for very many years - it finally closed in 1870-2
The population was 2096 in 1805, and 2500 in 1851
In 1829 the little community at Kettleness slipped into the sea one night but the inhabitants were rescued by Alum boats
